  1. How old do you have to be to learn to surf?

  2. Children over 7 years old. Children under this age may be included in the classes if conditions allow or they have adequate skills. Towards the end of the lesson the younger ones can usually join in the fun at no cost. Our priority is on safety but we like to include all members of the family where possible.

For the more mature students, lesson plans can be adapted to suit fitness level and age.

  3. How far do we go out into the surf?

  4. We usually operate in waist height water where people can stand on the sandbank easily catching white-water waves. As skills develop where appropriate, students will be taken into deeper water.

  9. Is surfing dangerous?

  10. Our main focus (apart from having too much fun) is on safety and as part of Summerland Surf School's lessons you will learn safety skills that will last a lifetime.

  11. What about sharks?

  12. Statistically you are in far more danger driving to the beach than you ever will be surfing. Less than a handful of people die from shark attacks worldwide every year and this is mostly in the US and South Africa. In fact 90 people die each year from an allergic reaction to peanuts worldwide!

  13. What is the maximum number of people in a group?

  14. If you book ahead we can cater for up to 16 students at a time and can organise multiple sessions for larger groups.
